Here is a simple way to know if you are working with a design firm or someone just drafting home plans.

A design firm is going to ask about wall coverings, floor coverings, how you are going to use the different rooms in your home.  Design firms are going to ask you about natural light for the bathrooms, or wherever a woman is going to be putting on make up.  Design firms are going to ask about charging stations for cell phones or computers.  Design firms are going to ask about built in spaces for computers and work areas.  Design firms are going to take into account your wishes for your dream home and make suggestions on how to stay within your budget.  Design firms are going to ask you about how you plan to place your furniture in your new home, "will every thing fit where you expect it to fit."  Design firms will look at the placement of doors and windows carefully, are they functional, do they fit the space they are designed for?

A drafting firm is just going to give you room sizes and elevations, and they will not ask you about the any of the above.  Thoughts from a log home owner.
