Cleaning and staining
My BK Cypress log home is now 5 years old and the Florida sun is taking it's tole on the stain. The stain was applied by the builder and I would love some advise on stain suppliers and methods of application as I think it's time to have it done again. It was stained but not sealed and I'm trying to decide if this is something I could do myself or is it best to have it done professionaly. It is a one story 1,500 square foot home. Assembled by Bob Lindsey. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Thomas, thank you for your question. The stain product that was likely shipped with your package at that time was Woodguard. Currently we use Transformation by Sashco. Transformation, like Woodguard, is an oil-based exterior stain product; however, the formulation of the stain is more robust and longer-lasting in our opinion than the Woodguard product. It can be a lot of work re-staining a log home, but as an overview, here are the basic steps: clean your entire exterior cypress surfaces with a 50/50 water bleach solution; then re-caulk and joints, corners and checking as needed / desired; then apply the stain - the stain will need to be vigorously back-brushed and depending on the initial shade of Woodgurad, you may need to apply a second coat for the best result. If you would like to explore a bid on having the re-staining handled by an experienced contractor, I can provide the name and number for someone in your area. We can, of course, supply your stain and caulking products for the re-staining - I'd be happy to provide a quote to you for that just let me know.
